Hi everyone,
It's the latest from the greatest club there is...
This week saw the Ladies' Jubilee Cup played, with Sandra Gibbs taking the top spot (well done Sandra) and lovely Laureen Clew in second. Great golf Ladies.
The Weekday Medal last Tuesday saw
Ben Davis victorious, beating our very own Head Greenkeeper
Matt Hawker into second. Congratulations to you both.
The Hare Cup, which was played on Sunday, was won by
Thomas Dyer, with
Ted Langston in second and
Richard Bricknell in third. Well done to you all.
This week's Mixed Foursomes Supper evening, organised by
Lisbeth and
Poul Jensen, was also played last Sunday in cold but sunny weather. The winners were
Les and
Linda Meaton, with
Rose and
Peter Hargreaves in second. Great news and well played to you all.
Ali Vyas and
Karen Smith recently qualified for the County Foursomes after winning the knockouts at B&C.
They then went on to play rounds around Gloucestershire, culminating in the county finals last Sunday at The Bristol.
They played fantastically and came second. What great news, well done to you both.
Just a quick reminder to all juniors - The Clevedon Junior Open is this Sunday 16th, and the Minchinhampton Junior Open is on 23rd October. If you would like to play, please see the Junior Noticeboard or call us for more details.
So let's move on to Academy News.
This week I have been down to the Julian Trust once more with my large box of goodies to help the homeless as part of our continuing support for local charities.
They were shut for a little bit to do some refurbishment, but have now re-opened and are continuing to provide the excellent provision of a roof over many of the city's homeless folk.
I am always happy to provide for those who need - lots of loo rolls, washing powder, soaps and foodstuffs so that we also help the charity workers as well as those who benefit from the service.
The charitable organisation ticks on - I have answered the next series of questions set by my London Lawyers and the case which will be sent to the Charities' Commission is happily bubbling along. No idea when we will actually gain status, but I am really hopeful that this will be a big benefit to us and the club as we will be eligible for more funding for things. Exciting.
Paul has just about recovered from a fantastic week at Hazeltine - and he has so many tales to tell. I believe he is going to do a small presentation for the GGU about it and I look forward to hopefully seeing this on the Players' site in time.
Onto his current report of the week.
Hopefully the autumnal weather holds up at The Grove this week for the British Masters and Chris will be looking to push on after his first Ryder Cup appearance. It's always great to do well so close to home and hopefully he can match his success at Wentworth last May? With the final run of events to the Race to Dubai coming in just under two weeks, Chris will be looking to improve his European and World Ranking before a well earned December break.
I have now finalised my squad of eight players for South West England AASE Coaching and I have moved the winter sessions from Cumberwell Park to B&C. I have four girls and four boys in my squad. Five players from Cornwall, two from Somerset and one from Gloucestershire. Three of the players have handicaps as low as one. The AASE program is a two year academic course that covers technical ability, course management and strategy, psychology, finance, diet and golf fitness and constant goals setting to help the player focus on what and how they can achieve.
I am also due to start coaching the Gloucestershire youngsters over the winter months and very soon David Hares (GGU Coaching Chairman), GGU Squad Managers and GGU Squad Coaches will sit down to finalise the Squads for 2017. I have worked with Gloucestershire for sixteen years and I can remember back all those years ago when I came across Chris Wood. We are always looking for the next future star and I'm pleased to say that Gloucestershire have an abundance of young talent.
This year I have been in charge of Tri Golf which I must admit, I have thoroughly enjoyed as it is so different to any other coaching I have ever done. I am teaching children between the ages of three and six on a Saturday morning and it's been pleasing to watch the group grow over the year. The sessions finish at the end of this month for the winter. It's such a shame it gets so cold for the little ones over the winter, but I don't want to put them off playing golf altogether!
Alongside the new Titleist 917 woods, the new Callaway Fusion driver is due for delivery this week. All I have seen is a picture of the head, but it looks classy and already a number of you have asked me about the new line. I will have demos available in both left and right hand.
