Academy news

This week Paul had his England Golf AASE squad weekend here at the club with a special guest and we see an instructional from lovely assistant Nick. Let's start with Paul's report of the week:

Paul's Report

I always say that 'things happen for a reason' and during last weekend I had one of those experiences. I had the England South West Junior Squad for both days and as I drove to the golf course in the early hours of Saturday morning, I realised that not only was it extremely cold but the snow had pretty much covered the entire golf course.

I had asked Woody to attend my squad session and I had plans to use the short game area, driving range, perhaps play a few holes but my aspirations had been somewhat dented.

I decided that due to the poor weather to move the Q&A session with Woody forward to a 9.30am start and before we knew it 12 noon had descended upon us. Chris was absolutely brilliant with the youngsters. I provided the themes and golfing topics to discuss and Woody just reeled off tip after tip as the players lapped up his take on life as a world class golf player.

Thanks to Chris for taking time out and putting back into the grass roots. He is due to help with my Gloucestershire Junior Squad this Sunday and I sense how excited the players will be to work with Chris.

Matt Hawker, our fantastic Head Greenkeeper has been working hard on his 'new' game and I am excited by the improvements he's made. We have spent approximately 8/9 hours together now in an attempt to make him a single figure golfer. He has been brilliant to work with and the plan for the next couple of months is to prepare for the April Medal by doing on course tuition. I will give you more of a detailed update in next week's edition.

Rory's new Callaway Epic driver has sent shock waves around the golf industry and I am pleased to announce a Callaway Fitting Day on Friday 24th March between 1pm and 5pm. If you wanted to squeeze in an after work fitting session, please get in contact and I can request a change of timings. Sessions will need to be booked in advance and Liam O' Sullivan who I believe is one of the best fitters around, will be on hand will all of the latest electronic gadgetry, pro spec heads and shafts and bundles of equipment to fit the right clubs for your game. It will probably book up quickly so please don't delay.

Waterproof golf bags are now the 'in thing' in golf with all brands now releasing their lines of carry and cart bags. The new Callaway waterproof lightweight bags are superbly made, yes they come with a higher price tag but ooze quality and style and are designed either as a carry or cart bag.

Regards,
Paul

It certainly sounds like everyone had a fab time! Now we learn some more tricks of the trade from Mr Nick R! Over to you Nick:

Nick's Tips

NickSince the weather has been bad recently, I thought I would put together some tips to play your best golf in the rain!

Keep dry -This is the most important thing to do when playing in the rain. I'm sure everyone has been in the position where they have leaking shoes or waterproofs at some point. This is never a fun experience because it distracts you from your golf, and is uncomfortable to play in.

Prepare - Always get your kit together the night before. This will reduce your chance of turning up for a competition in the rain with no food or waterproof clothing, which I have been a victim of many times! When preparing the night before, it is important to check the weather forecast so you know what clothing to pack, and also the appropriate food and drink necessary. In addition to this, it could be worth checking that you have enough balls, tees and gloves just in case you run out during the round.

Know the rules - In the winter especially, some rules can apply that could help you save some shots. These could include 'winter rules' or 'preferred lies' on closely mown areas through the green, or relief from certain areas of the course. These types of rules could be helpful because it could be the difference of hitting a mud ball or a clean ball that will go straight. The local rules for B&C are on the noticeboard in the spike bar.

Accept the weather - When playing in the rain it is easy to get a defeated attitude and not take the game seriously. This could be because a golfer isn't enjoying their round due to the conditions, or they lose care because their handicap is likely to go up. Instead, the golfer should focus on the positive aspects of their game, and remember that everyone else will be in the same position as you. This normally means the CSS will likely go up, or you could win more balls when you make a two!

Be BOLD - This is important when you are putting or chipping, as the greens are likely to be soft and wet which means the ball will stop much quicker than normal. This means you can afford to pitch the ball closer to the hole as it won't release as far, but it will also look cool when you slam dunk the ball into the hole! :)

Hope this helps. Nick

Brilliant tips to sharpen up your game, thanks Nick. Next week sees the second in our video series of how to play the course - Mr McG and Mr R will be tackling 7th for your delectation, so something to look forward to for next week (weather permitting!) On that note, have a great week Caren, Paul, Nick and Andy.
