Academy news

This week sees an update on Paul's work with Matt Hawker and a video on playing the 7th. Let's start with Paul's report of the week.

Paul's Report

Matt Hawker and I met up at the end of last week to focus on his short game. He has really struggled over the past handful of years with his short chipping and longer pitches into the green. Confidence has been low and it has been a matter of just trying to get the ball onto the green and even that has become an issue.

Matt's chipping has come on leaps and bounds since over first session on chipping a few weeks ago and I was getting so excited by the improvements he has made to it.

The main key for Matt is to try to keep the right hand and arm out of the swing. Previously the right hand has been gripping too tightly causing the right arm to appear too straight and tense at address. From there he was making a particularly long backswing and stabbing to a stop at the ball, causing thinned chips and duffs behind the ball.

You should see it now! He actually looks like a tour professional. All Matt needs to focus on are the key tips I have given him and hey presto, he can chip well.

I now need to check that Matt can do all the right things out on the course and over the next month or so, our focus will be playing real golf rather than hogging the practice grounds. When I feel Matt is ready to be realised into the wild, the first competitive qualifying round will probably be in April. No pressure Matt!

I attended a fascinating two day conference at the PGA Headquarters this week with two Top 50 Coaches of America, Brian Manzella and Michael Jacobs. They have been researching the movement of the golf club for nearly thirty years with the help of a robotics expert, Dr Stephen Nesbit.

With bespoke computer software, they can track the golf swing movement at particular points upon the human anatomy of all standard of player, from major winner to recreational players. They have findings that they believe are ground breaking and shared their beliefs with a group of professionals from all over Europe. I really enjoyed thinking of the swing in a more theoretical way although I think for most players, it would be way too much information. I've always believed, the simpler you can keep things the better!

Thanks for this Paul, and well done Matt! Now on to the video the lads have prepared to help you play the 7th!

Staff news

7th Hole

After much demand Nick and I decided to head down to the 7th and take each other on in a strokeplay challenge. We've also thrown in a few tips on strategy and the different shots you can use on this short but tricky hole. So who's going to come out on top in this weeks challenge...only one way to find out!

7th Hole    The Lads

Brilliant once again, congrats to you both.

Next week sees me return with some more exciting episodes of A Day in the life of the Pro Shoppers (what a programme that would be! I may lobby ITV.....)

The fantastic new range of PING putters have arrived in store. Come in and have a look at the PING Sigma G putters which are packed full of new technology.

PING    TEddy

Finally I would like to thank Nansi Mann for these gorgeous teddy bears she has knitted for our baby - I love handmade stuff and I am rubbish at doing it myself so it is always wonderful to receive such gorgeous gifts.

On that note, have a great week!
