Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well and waiting for Club News because that's where we're going first!

Club news

We started the week with the Seniors V Ladies match.

The Seniors V Ladies match is always a fun experience, and led by Seniors' Captain Steve Tilley and Ladies' Captain Sarah Cheetham, last Monday was a great event and well supported. The Seniors were the eventual victors (8.5 to 6.5) and they retained the Silver Teapot trophy with the blue ribboned handle. Great golf guys, maybe next year it will have a pink ribboned handle....!

So what's on the way?

*Seniors' Stableford 24th March - no need to book
*Season Opener March 25th - sign up in the Spike Bar
*27th-31st March Course Maintenance

Don't forget to enter the Summer Knockouts, entry available until 26th March in the Pro Shop. You must have an active handicap to play and payment is due on entry. We are looking for a partner in the Fry Challenge to play with a super lovely new member Steve playing off single figures so if you don't have a partner, come and speak to us. Choose from Singles Cartwright Cup at £4 pp, Four ball better ball Fry Challenge with a partner of your choice at £8 per pair, New Zealand FBBB draw for partner at £4 pp or the Arthur Young draw for partner one man and one lady at £3 pp.

Academy news

This weekend saw Andy coaching his County Academy Squad and Paul coaching his Under 18 GGU County Squad - over to the boys for the round up!

Improve your mindset - Take Courage

On Sunday I played with my Gloucestershire Under 18 Squad on the Channel Course at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club. As you can imagine being a Golf Professional I am expected to play well every time I play. I cannot make the excuse that I may not have played for the past month as people assume that I practice and play every day but I'm sure you know, this is definitely not the case. I'd love to play more golf but my job commitments at the club restrict my time on the course. Nevertheless I love to get out there and put my theories to the test and weirdly I still think I am improving as a player and most of this is down to my mindset.

The key to improving mindset is to continually assess your thoughts and decide whether you are thinking the way you need to think in order to get better.

An example may be a negative thought or a fear of hitting a bad shot. You could continue to hit the shot with these thoughts running through your mind or you can decide to turn the fear or negativity into the opposite, positive and courageous thoughts.

You could stand on the 11th tee and feel nervous of the out of bounds on the left or the trees and wall on the right and it wouldn't be normal if you didn't. The key to hitting a good shot though is to talk to yourself. Picture what you want to do and imagine seeing a great shot. Then take the courage to completely commit to hitting that shot, regardless of wherever the ball goes.

If you can learn to enjoy the challenge of being able to do this, you will be able to play under the utmost pressure.

Paul

Hi everyone,

This week I had my second session with the Gloucester County Academy Programme Futures squad. This session was all about the long game and striking the ball out the middle of the face consistently. We put some tape on the face of the clubs as you may have done when being custom fit for clubs, and recorded where the boys were striking the ball. It was amazing to see how they adjusted their swings and really concentrate to ensure a centred strike.

We also encouraged them to take shallow divots with every iron shot to make sure they were hitting the ball with a descending blow off the turf. The boys faces when they were able to hit three or four shots in a row with a lovely crisp strike was brilliant! They were so happy with themselves and got genuinely excited about the improvement they had made. It has been a real test for me to coach this group without getting too technical as some of them are only 10 years young. However, by giving them challenges every session and a few helpful hints, they quickly adapt and learn what it is they need to do to improve.

It is really important at this age for them to learn through discovery and adaptation rather than over technical instruction. This way they will develop motor and cognitive skills that are essential for improving and becoming top class players. They will learn and understand how they can continue to improve and adapt to swing changes or on course problems, instead of becoming over reliant on a coach who is going to give them the genius bit of technical instruction that's going to help them get better.

I believe coaching children this way is so important but is often overlooked by many who just view them as mini adults and don't adapt to how children think differently. However, I do think that in the future this won't be the case. Hopefully as coach education continues to improve so will the standard of coaches who teach the future stars of tomorrow. Before the boys were allowed to go they had to have their picture taken in their county colours. The big kid at the back is me by the way!

Have a great week and hopefully Nick and I will be back with another video next newsletter.

All in all a great coaching weekend here at the Academy! For my part, I am getting ready for end of year and the joy of P60s so I may need to hibernate in the office for a bit! And no Tony, I haven't dropped it yet!!

Nick played in the weekend roll up with Tony John and Mike Blake and he had a great time - thank you for looking after him boys!

On that note, have a great week.
