When you have watched some your junior peers climb above you on the professional ladder and feel as if you can do the same, these depressing times would knock many a good player down. Sam has shown great belief in himself. Last winter he went back to temping to save the substantial amount of money he needed for this season, regrouped, made improvements and has made big strides forward this season. Needing a good season to be able to afford European Tour School, he recently won his first tournament picking up a decent cheque for £3,000. He then took the opportunity to enter a pre Qualifying event for the only English tournament on the European Challenge Tour, the Bridgestone Challenge. Ninety players played in the pre Qualifier with the winner gaining a spot in the £180,000 event. Sam played beautifully and got himself into a playoff against an ex pupil of mine, Walker Cup star from 2015 Jimmy Mullen. Why Jimmy stopped coming to see was a mystery to me and since he has dropped off the planet, but never mind! Sam beat Jimmy on the second extra playoff hole and this week tees it up at Luton Hoo Hotel Golf & Spa in the main event. Sam is such a lovely young lad, quiet and unassuming and ploughs in the dedication required to get to where he believes he should be. Living near to Bigbury GC in Devon, he makes the effort to see me once or twice each month and after a three hour journey from Devon to B&C in the M5 holiday traffic last Friday, his game looked in shape and it was nice to see that he could hardly contain his excitement to play this week.
Good luck Sam. I hope it all works out for you. You deserve it! To keep up to date and follow the live scores click here. We start the New Siblands School inclusion sessions next week, so that should be a great start to the Autumn season's school teaching. Excited to see how the lads get on, especially as this is Nick's first real work in school settings and with inclusive teaching. Good luck to the lads. A quick thank you to Tony Mann - Tony, we love the zoo and those tickets are brill. Thank you! On that note, have a great week Caren, Paul, Andy and Nick.
