Our new Assistant, Kristian, started with us on Wednesday, and we wish him the best of luck here at B&C. He will be working through the middle of most days so please feel free to pop in and make him feel welcome.
I had an exciting call from PING last week to organise a PING Fitting Day. On Friday 28th March between 11.00am and 3.00pm, James Turnbull, who is highly regarded as one of the best fitters in the country, will be with us to both enhance our knowledge, and fit people for all the latest men's and ladies' PING drivers, fairways, rescues, irons and wedges. A day not to be missed for the PING connoisseur or someone interesting in trying some of the best clubs on the market to date. Click here to book a thirty minute appointment to avoid disappointment on the day, or get in touch with us at the pro shop.
In six weeks time I will be competing in my once every four year professional tournament. I decided that, if I was going to play in a tournament, then I was going to put in every effort. It's very difficult for me to practice and play regularly, due to my club and teaching commitments, but I really fancied a go at this particular tournament at Saunton Golf Club. The Saunton Classic on the West Region schedule pulls not only the irregular competitor like me to the fore, but journeyman playing professionals, who compete on the European Seniors' Tour, EuroPro and European Challenge Tour. As a challenge to myself I want to try to win this two day tournament held over the East and West courses. This will obviously be an extremely difficult task but I am going to do whatever I can to be totally prepared to play well.
Practice started three weeks ago and the first exercise was to work out exactly what I needed to do in the run up to Saunton in order to be ready.
What I do from day to day will be totally dependent on the weather. Click here to download my schedule:
- Distances session should take 1 to 2 hours
- Pitching sessions will be around 1 to 2 hours
- Technical chipping sessions will be around 30 minutes
- Short game pressure practice will take around 30 minutes to play.
- Putting practice will take around 30 minutes
- Hitting balls - 60 balls maximum with a short warm up - 45 minutes
I've got 6 x captain pro challenges (9 holes) between now and the tournament
I will also play 18 holes at Royal North Devon, and I will play a practice round on the west course at Saunton - date to be confirmed
I produced this table so I could work out when to block time out of my diary allowing me to be totally concentrated for my practice sessions. With the new season fast approaching, can you apply a similar routine to your game? Even if you can't afford the time that I have spent on practice, come and talk to us and see how a good practice structure can help your golf flourish in 2014.
I have recently upgraded to the new Titleist 714 AP1 irons and I have invested in four wedges. I now have a Pitching wedge, 50 degree Gap wedge, 54 degree Sand wedge and a 58 degree Lob wedge. Both courses at Saunton require a good wedge game, hence the four wedge system that I will be bringing into play. Over the next six weeks, Pitching will be one of my main focuses with the plan to introduce three backswing positions. A full swing, 3/4 swing and a half swing which will give me three distances with each of my wedges and with the differing lofts, lots of trajectory and spin options for the Devonian wind.
In just three weeks, I have seen a huge improvement in my game. My long game has come on tremendously and I feel confident that I can hit the ball where I would like it to go. I have been practising my putting on the carpet at home, (Caren doesn't like it!) checking my alignment and positioning with an alignment mirror and alignment sticks. Something I have noticed subconsciously over the past couple of years is that I have been standing further and further away from the ball when putting. It wasn't until I started with my alignment mirror that I realised that the Scotty Cameron putter I am currently using has a much flatter lie angle than my old PING putter. I remembered that I bent my PING putter to be more upright so that I could get closer and and my eyes more on top of the ball. Eureka! The next day my Scotty Cameron was fixed into my loft and lie machine and bent two degrees more upright. What a difference! I felt more comfortable straight away and I have seen a huge improvement in my putting on the course.
I still occasionally struggle with the odd, shall I say, 'yip' with some shots around the green. I can go from playing impressive chips to the most embarrassing chips. I have had a couple recently during Captain Pro Challenges with Peter and it still worries me a little. Chris Wood gave me a lesson two weeks ago and I need to work hard at his suggestions. I think I have got very sloppy with my technique over the years and I need to improve it. As a coach, I know that the yips start from poor technique before it seeps its way into the mind. I've got six weeks to get this right!
I know I will be extremely nervous during the tournament but I will be ready with my own process goals and these will usually be in the form of technical thoughts that have been finalised the day before. The goal will then be to focus on these thoughts during every shot regardless of how I will be scoring. If I get too tied up in my score and the result then I can forget doing well! I'll let you know nearer the time, what my technical thoughts and goals will be but for now, I wish you a fantastic week.
