All of this promotion talk brings us round to the subject of (yes you guessed it) Christmas! We love all things festive here in the pro shop and we have some awesome gifts for you this year. Glenmuir is always the bomb when it comes to knitwear, and this year is absolutely no different. Take a look at these beautiful goodies!

So much festive cheer and guess what, there’s going to be more every Saturday in December.

PMGA will be filling you with mulled wine and mince pies on 7th, 14th and 21st December and even worse, the pro shop team will be in Christmas jumpers from 1st December.

Now on to Academy News.

Academy news

This year we have chosen Springboard Opportunity Group as our chosen charity to support. As many of you will know, our (now 16 years old) Cameron is a previous user of Springboard, which is a special needs playgroup based in Clevedon.

We cannot praise Springboard highly enough, especially when Cam was tiny. They provided a fun place for him to go and play with other disabled children, which also gave us a breather when it was hard to get any respite from anywhere.

They are a wonderful mix of sheer fun, sensory play and structure for the children, as well as practical help and advice for parents. They have been a lifeline to many parents who are lost in the maze of disability terror and confusion, and we are very grateful to know they are always on our side.

They are always short of sundries, as they are a registered charity and rely on donations and fundraising to pay for the work they do. We have been quietly fundraising and yesterday we travelled to Springboard to donate four boxes of sundries, everything from disposable aprons, latex free gloves and Conti wipes to dishwasher tablets and even coffee.

We’re always pleased to help out and they were thrilled to receive the items. We hope to continue to provide items with your help and support. Look out for the latest charity news and promotions.

Andy’s inclusion group started last Sunday and they ventured out to the academy course ready to play a few adapted holes. We are very lucky to have use of the bottom practice ground as it is a perfect set up for our inclusive work but also a great facility for beginners.

Four of our regular participants, most of whom have been coming to inclusive coaching for three or four years, and for whom we provide free of charge coaching and parties from a trust which supports us and kind member donations, competed in a mini competition.

All of these groups have been run by Andy since their inception, and every one of the participants were complete beginners, all of whom have varying special needs. The progress they have made under Andy’s expert tuition and care has been enlightening and Paul was able to attend the session last weekend to see how fabulous their progress is.

Look at the fun and friendships they have experienced at the club. Being a disabled person can be a lonely experience (we know ourselves how hard it is to find suitable things for our son) and our remit has always been to provide something special for these wonderful kids. Please watch the video below to see them supporting each other and having fun!

Thank you to all of you guys too for allowing these amazing kids the opportunity to experience this very special place and also to Andy for being a very special coach and a vital part of our golf club.

Improve your putting!

Did you know that the average amateur golfer has between 33 and 38 putts per round?

Whereas the average tour player has 29 putts per round! Although that doesn’t sound like much, it all adds up!

We have all left putts out there, so here are a few simple ways to improve your putting without changing your stroke:

Lag Putting:

Most golfers get too focussed on the line and forget out the speed of the putt.

The key to long putting is not to focus on the line of the putt too much, but to focus on the speed of the putt. You are more likely to miss a lag putt 6 or 7 foot short or long of the hole, than left of right of it.

A simple speed drill for lag putting would be to set up four tees around the hole in a two foot box, and hit 3 balls from 10ft, 15ft, 20ft, 30ft etc…

The goal for this is to get the ball to finish inside the 2ft box, and get a feeling for the connection between the stroke and distance of a putt.

Green Reading:

This is different for everyone, as the line into the hole will differ depending on how aggressively you hit the putt.

I believe the best way to see the slope of a putt is to look from behind the hole instead of behind the ball, as it is easier to see how the ball will break over the last few feet. This is important because the ball will break more at this point because it should be at its slowest.

Visualisation:

During your pre shot routine, try and visualise the putt rolling along your chosen line, and dropping into the centre of the cup. This is key for all good putters, as they are training their subconscious mind to hole the putt! Positive thinking and self-talk is a massive aspect to golf.

Insurance read:

This will contribute to reducing your 3 putts! We’ve all gone for the birdie putt, and left a knee knocker coming back for the par! If you are going to go for the first putt, make a habit of watching what the ball does after it has passed the hole, so you can have an easier read coming back

Relax:

You will only putt well if you are relaxed, calm, and accepting of any outcome of a putt regardless if it was influenced by you or not.

Remember to control your breathing through the stroke, stay calm, and keep your putter in one piece!
