Hole more putts...

Last week Nick, Andy and I had a special visit from Tom Hanson, PING Europe’s Fitting Specialist, who wanted to train us on how to use an exciting new fitting app developed by PING.

The new PING Putting App that we use for putter fittings has just been upgraded, and I was really impressed by many of its new functions. It allows us to measure a players putting stroke and then recommend certain types of putter which will help a player gain more consistency.

Getting the right putter in a golfer’s hands will improve performance on the greens by producing:

a) a more consistent strike from the face of the putter to help with control of distance.

b) a loft angle at impact that produces the best roll on the ball.

c) a putter neck or shaft shape to compliment the stroke shape, improving the players target miss tendency.

d) a better stroke tempo with the correct weight and balance of putter.

I tried the app on my putting stroke and a number of factors showed in the results. The red numbered lie angle of 22.8 degrees explained my tendency to strike putts from the toe side of the face of the putter. My hands were positioned way too high at address and just by flattening the position of my shaft at address and lowering my hands, improved my strike consistency and I noticed that I holed many more shorter range putts than usual.

I had no idea that my shaft lean was too forward and ahead of the ball at impact. The change in dropping my hands and a small ball position adjustment, corrected the shaft lean and I was impressed with the roll I achieved on my putts.

The app also suggested that my current Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter was suitable for my stroke characteristics.....phew! If you’re looking for a new putter, then come and use this new gadget. It’s a great tool for us to use during both a fitting and a putting lesson.

Academy news

Lovely surprises...

This week has been a great one for us, from an inclusion point of view. We received this lovely card from Springboard, to thank us for the donation of items I delivered last week. It was a surprise and put a smile on our faces. Always happy to help Springboard!

I also received this amazing certificate from the Daisy Garland. Some of you may remember 2 years ago I received an invitation to the House of Lords to receive an award for my charity fundraising.

At the time I had just had Monaghan and was unable to go. Sarah and David Garland kept my certificate for me, and I had intended to collect it from Totnes in south Devon but never made it there.

Instead they popped it in the post for me and I finally received it at the weekend.

I'm really proud to have received something so amazing!

Talking of inclusion on Sunday 15th Andy will be running our annual Christmas inclusion golf session and Christmas party. The participants will be having their little Christmas party in the shop so please say hi if you see us!

Our inclusion sessions are open to everyone with special needs of any sort. And I do a mean cheese and pickle sarnie so it’s worth coming for the dindins as well as the quality tuition. All of this is possible due to the incredible support we receive from the Trust who have been supporting our inclusion work for quite a few years now. We are also in receipt of regular donations for our disability work from one of our amazing lady members. We are so blessed to have her wonderful generosity.

Sometimes, the difference between a scratch golfer and a 9-handicapper can be quite small, such as how far they each hit the ball. However, there is certainly one part of the game that can be hugely different and it’s the area where your score is either made or lost.

Why the gap?

It's brilliant to see more club golfers getting fitted for new clubs now than ever before, and long may that continue!

But why would you not get fitted for your wedges?

With modern lofts on irons being stronger than ever (one of the reasons today's irons go further than a decade ago), golfers are often left with huge gaps between clubs at the bottom of their bag.
