Greetings from Paul Mitchell Golf Academy
Bristol & Clifton Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

We came, we saw, we ...drove like idiots!

So we had our pro shop Christmas do last week, and it was such a lot of fun! We went karting at TeamSport karting in Avonmouth, somewhere I have never been before, and I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive. I did not kart myself, but now I wish I had. Sometimes I do let my fears control me and I really shouldn't!

The boys arrived and met us in the viewing gallery for their pre-race briefing. They all had to wear boiler suits and crash helmets, and they raced in Honda karts over the most fun indoor course. The results were mixed, with the boys in the pits some of the time being told off for dodgy manoeuvres, but this was the results sheet from the first of two races they competed in!

We then went to the Failand Inn for a delicious three course Christmas dinner, enjoyed by all. We love these boys so it was a pleasure to spend the evening with them. The only problem is that I haven't gone karting, and now I really want to, so we are going as a team at Easter to Cheddar to kart once again on a different but equally exciting track. This time I am going to whoop their asses! (not difficult is it boys?...ha ha).

Disabled golf news

We restart our special schools coaching in January but I am not one to rest on my laurels. I am in talks with the county to see if I can obtain extra funding to extend our services to Baytree special school in Weston. There is a potential £500 on the table so I am excited and hopeful. I recently looked into golf provision in North Somerset (we usually coach in Bristol special schools) and although Tickenham are very good with autistic children through their funding source Sportivate, they do not really do what we do i.e. coach ALL disabilities and ALL ages. I am so proud of my team for being fully inclusive, woo hoo. We turn nobody away! The upshot of my investigations are that I need much more funding, because I am not going to be satisfied until I have offered all schools in this area some coaching.

With the advice and help of Michael Leek OBE and also the club, I am applying for a small grant for community provision through Pudsey Bear's children in need appeal. This helps companies, charities and trusts to provide facilities and services to children with disabilities in the UK. This is an uphill struggle, but anyone who knows me knows I don't shirk from hard work so I really really hope I can get the funding. I so want to go into every special school in the locality and give them a bit of a different experience . The whole process can take months so I will keep you updated as things happen.

One of our inclusive session attendees Phil has his birthday on 31st December. He is a lovely chap, and he will be 29. He has learning difficulties but he is very fond of coming to B&C. He has come to every one of our inclusive sessions and has practiced in between. He asked me if I would teach him on his birthday, so I asked my lovely staff if anyone was able to come in and teach Phil for me (I'm obviously unqualified and I think his golf may deteriorate under my care!). Luke has kindly offered his services for FREE and he will coach Phil for me on New Year's Eve. How awesome is that? He is a One Direction fan so we bought him a One Direction card and present so he should be really pleased!

I need to get thinking about the next Get into Golf day after christmas too! Can't wait to dust off the inflatable net and get out there again. Excited! Incidentally if anyone has a portable generator they could lend me for our get into golf days, I would be immensely grateful. Every time we do a get into golf day, we have to use some of our valuable funding money to pay for the generator which is often at least £50. I would rather spend this on two disabled golf sessions, helping children to learn how to play. If you can help us, please do let me know.

Thank you's!

I would like to thank John Savva for his grapes, lovely big juicy grapes were this week's kind gift. Thanks John! You spoil us so much.

I would also like to thank Mrs Mann, Tony's wife, for Cameron's beautiful chocolate cake - delicious! The others couldn't help helping themselves too!

I would also like to thank county player Jake Philips for our giant box of Jaffa cakes, thanks Jakey!

Mulled wine!

Most of our December Stableford competitors partook of the Academy Mulled Wine and mince pie service this weekend. We really hope you all enjoyed it! Next Saturday is mulled wine, Yule log and fruit cake day so look out for us in daft costumes again next weekend! And please take no notice of my Nora Batty wrinkled elf tights, they don't fit properly and for some reason the crotch is too low! I do suffer for my art!

Upheavals!

So what's the exciting news I wrote about last week? Well.......we have made a gargantuan decision to let TaylorMade go as a brand for now. We have basically had a year of problems with them, an-yone who ordered anything custom built from them will know what we mean. They had a major system changeover which they were not prepared for and which was disastrous for us and them. They often let us down, and we don't want to let you down so we had little choice but to let them go. Paul is in talks with Callaway, with the potential for the brand to return to the pro shop. I am fascinated to see what happens next!

Now I would like to pass you all on to Paul!

Firstly can I say thank you to our Captain Azim. He has not only been an amazing captain for our club but also a fantastic foursomes partner in the Captain Pro Challenges. We have played fifteen matches throughout the year and have only lost two of them, which shows just how well Azim has played all year.

We played our annual Scottish flavoured Captain/Pro Challenge against Mike Clew and Andrew Bowen. It is an old tradition that the Clews put on some wonderful Haggis, Neaps and tatties after nine holes of the final match of the year. Of course this was followed by plenty of whiskey! I hadn't had an alcoholic drink for three months until the match and kind of lost consciousness until about nine o'clock that evening after the morning match! Thank you for the hospitality Mike, it was great fun!

Dr Karl Morris makes a one off visit to Bristol and Clifton Golf Club for an evening seminar in March and the psychology work I have been undertaking with Karl over the Autumn has been enlightening. One of the main studies has been on the subject of the pre shot routine and I wanted to give you the heads up on keys to mindset success and the concept of the before, during, in between and after shot mental routines.

Before a shot is hit, the main psychological keys are to:-

1. Make sure that you have neutral thinking regardless of the score or situation and treat each shot as if it's the first shot of the day.
2. Understand that how you are as a person off the golf course doesn't necessarily mirror how you are on the golf course?
3. Learn to appreciate and value your golfing ability and learn to accept whatever happens on the golf course.
4. Be prepared through effective practice.

During the golf shot a golfer should consider the following:-

1. Using a trigger to start their pre shot routine. For many golfers this could be fastening the velcro of their glove or pulling the club from their bag?
2. Appreciate that there is a concentration zone around the ball. Once you have stepped into the zone, full concentration must be applied.
3. Ask yourself 'what do you want to do with the golf ball?' Then focus on doing just that.
4. The practice swing is an opportunity to rehearse the perfect shot.
5. Improving your ability to bring yourself into the 'now'. Precise focus of attention on the shot you are about to play.

In-between shots there is plenty of time for the mind to wander and here are some keys that will enable you to concentrate just when you need too:-

1. Maintain good body posture between shots. There are many studies that have proved good posture, chin up and eyes forward produces a more positive mindset. When we feel down, we naturally look down at the ground. This will just make matters worse and will have an effect on your overall body language and ultimately your swing.
2. It is vital to release emotion. You cannot harbour anger or elation as it may have an effect on your game. It can affect how you deal with 'the now'.
3. Concentrate on your breathing. Did you know that in Tiger's prime, he was able to slow his heart rate down to a resting pace, regardless of the situation using breathing techniques.

The way you control your mindset after a shot, may determine how you produce your next shot.

1. Always remember your good shots and never dwell on your bad shots.
2. Keep a golf diary and write down after each practice or round of golf:- What was good today? What could be better? How will I improve it?
3. Move on! What's done is done. You may have hit a seven iron to six feet but it doesn't mean you will whole the putt. Being able to reset and treat each shot with the same level of importance is one of the keys to consistent golf.
4. Work hard on improving the mental side of your game.

Book your ticket now to what I believe will be a game changing seminar on Wednesday, 11 March 2015 at 7.00pm in the clubhouse. Tickets are available in the Pro Shop at the cost of just £20.
