Greetings from Paul Mitchell Golf Academy
Bristol & Clifton Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hey up chucks!!

We started the Spring Season with our Captain Geoff Clements' Season Opener shotgun start on 21st March. Bathed in quite glorious morning sunshine, following Friday's solar eclipse (which was actually a bit rubbish, but I still managed to burn the retinas by eyeballing it!) the competition started with a shotgun at 8.45am where 28 pairs competed. At 1.30pm the second shotgun saw 20 more pairs take to the course. At time of writing I do not have the results but I am sure these will be covered in the next Captain's Corner. We did have a sneaky little laugh when a stray tee shot from the 10th came up to the pro shop, whacked the piece of green machinery outside and certainly woke Luke and I up with the clatter! I won't tell you who hit the shot as he's lovely and I don't name and shame!

The ladies this week competed in the Ladies' Stableford and the winner was Sue Wilson, with Veronica Shorttle in second place and Pauline Luckwell in third. Great golf Ladies!

The summer knockout entries will remain open this week until the end of the month, so if you haven't entered yet, you have until Sunday to get your name down. Please remember it is payment on entry by cash, it can't unfortunately go on pro shop accounts. We also can't enter you over the phone, so pop in and sign up.

Entry for Cartwright Cup (singles) is only £4, New Zealand (draw for partners) £4, Fry challenge (four ball better ball, choose your own partner) £8 per pair and the Arthur Young (man/lady draw for partners) £3.

It was also our first Junior Team Match of the year, played here at home on Sunday against Long Ashton. Our team fought valiantly, but unfortunately we were slightly overpowered on the day. It does not matter at all, we were only 2-1 down, and it could have gone either way as we were so close most of the time. I am excruciatingly proud of my team of six lads. Elliott (captain), Seb, Harry, Finn, Finnian and Lewis, you did us proud boys. Congratulations on a fantastic first match, on a strong team spirit and for giving it your best shot. We will continue to shine as an example of good team spirit and fabulous etiquette - well done guys.

Junior Golf Passport

On the same day, Luke ran his Junior Golf Passport group on the putting green. We would love to keep increasing attendance for these, after all unless you come regularly you won't get better (damn, I had hoped two lessons would turn me into Charley Hull. I'm more like Hull City!).

We also advise all passporters, previous and current, to practice regularly in between sessions if you want to be as good as our team players. You just gotta put the practice in!

So what's the craic in the PMGA this week? As mentioned last week, I have been thinking about the idea of an Inclusion festival, and the Super Sixes is a great way to introduce special needs children to the idea of a real golf course (but we will make it out of coloured cones on the range). I have now finalised the date, Friday, 25 September 2015 at 10am, and we have already invited Kingsweston special school to join us. They have accepted our invitation and we will now recruit another school to compete against them.

I have been busy buying things as rewards and prizes, as the Golf Foundation sent me another whopping £500 for this festival amongst other inclusive projects. These medals for every competitor, and rosettes for the winning team, will certainly give these wonderful children an incentive to beat their best scores. It's certainly not about winning or losing, it's about fun and I am borrowing the county inflatable net to use as a final game (game 6) of the super sixes. I can use lovely Mike Biggs' gift of our generator to power this, so it will cost very little to do something which means so much to these lovely kids.

We have ordered some new uniform for our little jaunt to Wentworth in May. I couldn't really send myself and the lads in yucky old pink shirts and poorly ironed trousers! We will have brand spanking new blue shirts, as worn by Rory somebody or the other (ha), white trousers (well they will start off white but one of us is bound to drop a Costa on them on the journey up!) and cover ups, all proudly crested with our Paul Mitchell Golf Academy logo and the Bristol & Clifton Golf Club logo (and all subsidised by my smashing rep Mike). Can't wait to wear it!

This week I asked my assistant Andy to prepare me an instructional, but a different kind of instructional concerning food intake and exercise. What many of you won't realise, because he doesn't tell people, is that Andy is a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic. He's in great shape so it goes to show that what you put in the tank, and what you do from an exercise point of view, makes a major difference to your wellbeing and how you achieve your goals. (It also gives you thin thighs!) So over to Andy!

"I've been diabetic now for 14 years and have had to be mindful of what I eat every day as it has an enormous effect on not only my blood sugar level but also my mood, concentration and feelings of energy or fatigue. Therefore I feel well placed to recommend what to eat in order to play your best.

Have you ever been exercising vigorously or not eaten for a long time and suddenly you start feeling weak and shaky? Then you start to feel a little confused and perhaps light headed, you might even get a bit short with people! This is because your blood sugar levels are low either because you haven't eaten for a long time or because you've depleted glucose levels in your body due to exercising. If you were to let yourself get into this state on the golf course imagine the damage it could do to your card as well as your body!

When on the course many people eat the wrong things or sometimes nothing at all! I often see people who only eat after 9 holes when they pop in the pro shop and grab a mars bar and hope that it lasts them the next two hours. This is bound to make them feel ok for the next half an hour, but by the time they've reached the valley, where we know your concentration levels are important, their blood sugar will be dropping again as will their energy and concentration. Disaster is just around the corner!

In order to avoid these dreaded blood sugar highs and lows I recommend eating the right things before, during and after you play.

Before playing it is important you eat a healthy balanced meal containing carbohydrates, protein and plenty of vegetables.

During play I recommend eating the following foods:

  • Nuts - almonds, cashews, pine nuts, walnuts etc.
  • Fruit and nut mix/trail mix
  • Sandwiches made with wholegrain bread - chicken, tuna, egg, ham, peanut butter
  • Fruit - dried apricots and apples are best
  • Some cereal and nut bars

These foods have a good balance of carbohydrates, fats, protein and fibre which your body can break down slowly and release over a longer period of time when eaten slowly throughout your round. They have a low glycemic index (GI), which means the energy contained will be released into the blood stream slowly and keep your blood sugar levels stable. A good example of something you could grab in the pro shop if you've failed to prepare is a get buzzing bar (see picture). They're made with natural ingredients and are low GI making them perfect to graze on when playing 18 holes.

Making sure you eat the right things when on the course is possibly the easiest thing that everyone can do to lower their scores. Not only will your game improve but your health will benefit too."

Andy

I am fascinated by food (usually from a binge/pizza/alcohol point of view!) and I am no example whatsoever, so follow Andy's lead and achieve your goals.

Thank yous this week

A massive thank you to all those who sponsored me this week! If you still haven't sponsored and want to, there is a sponsorship form on the pro shop noticeboard or go online to uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CarenJasmineMitchell. To everyone who has sponsored me so far, you are wonderful and I am so so grateful.

Thanks to Mrs Mann for another awesome cake - I unfortunately eat whatever I want and it shows, but at least I am happy (Not so happy when I have to lie on the floor to get my jeans done up!). Simply delicious.

I would also like to thank Julian Dawes for his amazingly kind donation of a Champions League hoodie and football. I was thrilled to receive this and will use it in a future raffle to raise money for our charities. Thanks Julian!

Thanks to Andy for Cam's little Smarties chocolate cake - Andy also brought a sparkler candle for Cam, which was so ferocious it set the smoke alarm off and the wellbeing of our eyebrows was in jeopardy! But Cam loved it, and he loved the drama of the potential burning down of the pro shop (have I bred a serial arsonist?!).

Finally the new Spring/Summer clothing is starting to come in bit by bit. We have the Glenmuir Ladies clothing in, with colours of coral, hues of spearmint and the odd bit of bling here and there. JRB and Nike collections are on the way. We also have men's Nike crested shirts coming in, alongside men's Glenmuir crested shirts and cotton sweaters.

The Seniors' Section new style shirts, jumpers and slipovers are now in, The cresting and monogramming are now in beautiful full colour and it really makes a difference. We have all sizes in stock currently so if you need some Seniors'Section wear, come and get it whilst stocks last.

We are also running, as a trial this year, a small amount of giftware. We have some handmade items from around this locality, handmade tee pockets from Somerset, snoods and doofers from Mere, cold pressed soaps from Dorset, silver sailboat earrings from Weymouth, DIY bead bracelet bags and so much more.

Level five British Sign Language now completed - again 100%! Two more levels and I have gained my first level BSL qualification and will get my certificate. I love it!

Have a great week,

Caren, Paul, Andy, Luke and Kris
