Hi guys,
We have had a very interesting week of competitive activity - here's the weekly round-up!
This week saw the Reverse Course competition played last Saturday. Fine weather, random golf holes (Matthew Hawker you are a star as always) and good fun I imagine.
The weekday medal last week was won by Hugh Silvey, with Ryan Blannin taking second place. Well done both! The previous weekday medal was won by John Laycock with Roger Speakman in second. Fabulous news!
The summer knockouts came to their conclusion with a 36 hole final on Sunday 27th. The competitors, Tim Westwood versus Robert Skinner in the singles, and Alistair Russell and Thom Dyer versus Phil Dadd and Brendan Blair in the fourball, played the course in beautiful weather, the final victors emerging as Tim Westwood & Thom and Alistair.
Congratulations all, what a great job you did.
Thanks to
Bob Bennett Photography for these fantastic pictures.
The Ladies played in the Daily Mail Foursomes last week, the winners of which were our club President
Marion Jackson with
Sue Wilson, and challenging in second place came
Paula Keaney and
Dorothy Bastable.
Su Worthington and
Karen Rix also played the final of the Fairman Cup on Sunday, with Su winning 4 and 3. Congratulations Su, well played.
On the Sunday, we also held our final Junior Club Competition of the year. I have to admit, in advance of the Caren Mitchell Trophy, I had visions of late September downpours, umbrellas, soggy waterproofs and sad little faces. However my fears were not founded and we had bright blue sky and even brighter sunshine. I breathe again….!!!
This competition is a junior 18 hole Stableford event, which concludes an order of merit the Pro Shop runs throughout the year. As we also have some younger juniors, we made a decision to also add on a 9 hole event, to allow every junior the chance to play on a fair basis. I simply couldn't exclude the wee ones and they wouldn't have been able to compete with the older ones.
Normal junior club competitions can sometimes disappear in the black hole of the very full golf club competition schedule for the year, but I was determined to make my trophy count and bring our wonderful juniors together to celebrate what we have achieved this year. 16 juniors signed up and the trophy kicked off at 2pm with the first grouping of 18 hole players, and the final 9 hole players teed off at 3.40pm.
Following the Trophy, our juniors attended the Paul Mitchell Golf Academy presentation ceremony. Here they were treated to tea (with our gratitude to
Mark Betteridge and the golf club for supplying this for them, it's hugely appreciated), a prize giving ceremony and a TV presentation of their achievements in 2015.
The full run down of our winners is as follows:
Winner Of The Caren Mitchell Trophy -
Fergus Cole (40 Points)
2nd Place -

Harry KennedyHere are some photos of our most enjoyable day.
Thank you to all our juniors, parents and helpers for making this a great occasion and also a great year for Junior Golf here at B&C. Thanks also to the golf club for my brand new Caren Mitchell Trophy - it is so beautiful in its simplicity and it speaks for itself - I love it.
I would also like to thank
Nick Uren for taking over as Junior Captain for 2016. Next year Nick will also be joining our academy team to work weekends - he's a lovely chap and we are so lucky to have him on the good ship PMGA!
I would like to thank
Pete Ascherl for being a most fabulous junior marshal, thanks so much Pete, and also
Sarah Kennedy for being our junior photographer for me, thanks Sarah.
I would like to pass over to Paul at this point for a report on
Jimmy Mullen's success in the first round of European Tour Qualifying and his preparation for The Dunhill Links:
Jimmy Mullen finished inside the top 23 players at Collingtree Park which qualified him to play in the next stage of European Tour Qualifying. After a poor first round, Jimmy played the last three rounds in a total of eight under to move through the field in the rain delayed tournament.
Paul Reed also qualified for Tour School Stage 2. Excellent play by both of them and fingers crossed for early November where they will compete in northern Spain. Both players will be allocated one of four courses with approximately twenty five percent at each course going through to the Tour Finals.
Jimmy has received an invite to play on the European Tour this week at the Dunhill Links Championship which is played at Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and the Old Course at St Andrews. This event is a pro amateur format and attracts players from all over the world. Hopefully Jimmy can find his 'A' game, make the three round cut and finish high on the leaderboard. He could bypass Tour School with a great performance just like Rory McIlroy did seven years ago. Wouldn't that be magic?
Great job guys, you are both working so hard and doing so well.
Thanks Paul. I am always amazed at how it is possible to bring a young person up to the standard required for the most famous golf tour in the world, but my hubby does it. It's nice to see these kids grow and gain the success they deserve.
